The evening primrose –originally native to America, nowadays also widely common in Europe– has a long history of being used as food and drug. Other common names for Oenothera biennis are German rampinon, King’s cure-all or fever-plant.
Evening primrose oil is obtained from the dried seeds. It is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially in gamma-linolenic acid, an essential polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid.
