L-citrulline is a non-essential amino acid that occurs naturally in food. Its name is derived from the Latin name of the watermelon – citrullus vulgaris – which has a particularly high concentration of citrulline. In the human body, it occurs as a metabolic intermediate and plays a role in the urea cycle and in NO synthesis.
